* * *

An hour had passed since Melanie had roused from her drug-induced sleep, and still no Jason. He’d promised to be here. The rejection hit hard. He’d walked away fifteen years ago, so why had she thought things had changed?

“Stop that.” Keith stood in the doorway with his arms crossed.

She scrunched her brow. “What?”

“You know what. That someone-hurt-my-puppy look.” He blew out a breath. “Jason’s on his way. He had something he had to take care of.”

Tears stung her eyes. She shifted her gaze to the window, away from Keith’s scrutinizing stare. “Got it.”

“I don’t think you do.”

She whipped her head around and faced him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

He pursed his lips, appearing to struggle with what to say. “He was a wreck waiting to see you. The man paced like a caged animal.” Keith scratched his jaw. “He cares about you...a lot.”

She gaped at him. “How do you know that?’

“Come on, Melanie. I can see it every time he looks at you.” Keith exhaled and ran a hand through his hair. “Just don’t give up on him. Okay?”

She nodded. The news eased her doubt, but until Jason confessed his feelings, she told herself to be cautious. Living through another abandonment from someone she cherished... She’d never recover.

“I—”

Jason burst in the door. His hair shot out in multiple directions, most likely from the stocking cap he held in his hand. His gaze found hers. “I’m so sorry. I was called away.”

“It’s fine. Keith said you’d be back as soon as possible.” She picked at the blanket lying across her.

“I’m going to go hunt down some food.” With that, Keith ducked out of the room.

Silence hung in the air as Jason made his way to her bedside.

He cupped her cheek. “I know that look.”

His touch sent butterflies fluttering in her stomach. Her brown eyes met his green. “What look?” Her voice shook.

“The one where you don’t think you deserve to be treasured.” He leaned in, his face mere inches from hers. His breath fanned her cheeks.

She swallowed. The man knew her well even after years apart.

His gaze dropped to her lips and drifted back to her eyes.

Time stood still. Was he asking permission to kiss her?

The door whooshed open, and Jason stepped back.

“I came to...” Nurse Janie bustled in. Her gaze darted between them. “Oops. Sorry about that. I can come back.” She turned to leave.

“No, come on in.” Jason lowered himself into the chair.

“You sure?” Janie sent a questioning look to Melanie.

Disappointment filled her. Maybe it had been her imagination, and Jason hadn’t wanted to kiss her after all. “Positive.”

“All right then.” Janie rounded the bed and checked Melanie’s vitals. “Doc said you can go home as soon as you eat breakfast, and he stops by to give you the stamp of approval.”

“Sounds good.” But where would she go? Back to Jason’s house? Or had he changed his mind about that?

Janie pivoted. Hands on her hips, she glared at Jason. “And you, son, better take care of this young lady.
